Texting – Fostering and Sustaining

A Cellular phone is one of the indispensable communication tools for many nowadays. They view it as an extension of their body, life, and personality. Many cell phone companies are now rising to produce various cell phone units that fit the needs of the consumers in a very affordable cost. With this proliferation of cellular phones, you can hardly identify which person owns a mobile unit and who doesn’t. The number of cell phone users is increasing because of the mobile phone’s easy to use interface and its multi-purpose features which includes fast and global connectivity. Indeed, a cellular phone is a must-have.

One of the most widely used features of cellular phones is texting. Texting refers to the exchange or transmission of messages between several cellular phones within a network of mobile phones. These messages may come as short text messages known as SMS or the Short Messages Service; or as images, videos, sound or audio clips known as MMS or the Multimedia Messages Services.

Texting has many uses for all the users around the world. First, texting is used as a medium for people to talk about taboos. Second, texting is used as a tool for ousting or disapproving a political leader. Third, texting is used as a way for people to create new identities, be it fictitious or not. Fourth, texting is used as a tool for expanding and sustaining new and personal social networks. Let me expound more on the fourth purpose of texting.

Texting is believed to be a way for consumers to foster and sustain relationships regardless of time and distance. In texting, users are able to expand their social networks inside a virtual space. There, in the virtual space, people coming from different places and time differences gather together to create and share their own new “present”. Like for example, user A is located in Saudi Arabia, which has a 5-hour time difference from the Philippines, where user b is located when they connect and communicate in the virtual space, they are already in one location (virtual space) with the same time shared since the messages are sent instantly. This feature makes the possibility of fostering and sustaining relationships more feasible – be it with a loved one or with a stranger. Thus, there is no more reason for separated relatives and friends to fuss over time and distance gap.

Through the affordable and fast texting, a person working abroad far from his family can lessen his homesickness and connect with his family and friends as if they’re just in the neighborhood. Husbands and wives can check up on each other’s behavior even from a distance. Children can communicate with their parents about their activities and whereabouts instantly. Two strangers can find romance or even true love relationship by connecting with a past lover or a stranger. On how the relationship will prosper depends on how the users would present themselves to each other through the virtuality of texting. All of these relationships may evolve or be maintained with the aid of texting which includes fast and global connectivity.

With all the possibilities aforesaid, the global obsession for texting is very understandable. Texting’s power to instantly connect and re-connect people surpassing time and distance is very much used by many people around the globe. The world is not a lonely place after all because texting made each and everyone connected at all times. This is even more emphasized by a mobile network’s ad saying, “Connecting people. Changing lives.”
